    Junior Rowing

Maritime Rowing Club has a large and active junior rowing program, which includes both middle and high school athletes. Maritime Rowing is home to the Maritime Advanced Team, New Canaan High School Crew, MRC Middle School Crew, St. Luke's School Crew and the Maritime Rowing Club Team. The junior rowing program is organized into the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.  All seasons include training and racing. The fall season runs from September through mid-November. Winter Training runs from mid-November through the end of February. The Spring season runs early March through early June.  Summer season runs June - August.

Maritime Rowing Club offers Summer Junior Rowing Camps on a high competitive level, as well as  learn-to-row and recreational levels. Weekend learn-to-row sessions are held Fall and Spring. MRC programs are open to any athlete who want to join. There are several competitive rowing opportunities within the program.  Athletes will be selected into the higher competitive teams based upon fitness, technique and coach's recommendation.

    Novice:

    • Athletes in their 1st year of rowing. 1st year rowers may challenge for higher competitive boats based upon fitness, skill level, and coach's recommendation.
    • Must achieve minimum knowledge of standards of safety, basic elements of boat configuration and rigging
    • Gain exposure to rowing skills in both sweep and sculling
    • Attendance at all practices and participation in designated competitive events is required

    Advanced Program:

    • For athletes who want to compete at the highest level of junior rowing. Selection is at the discretion and invitation of the coaches.
    • Rowers have a primary commitment to rowing, generally on a multi-season basis, likely to include winter and summer training and racing.
    • Rowers must meet minimum rowing fitness standards, such as erg scores or strength tests as determined by coaches
    • Training and development requires additional time. Practice is held 6 days/week, 2-2 1/2 hours/day in season. Rowers should be mindful of other commitments (e.g. SATs, Prom, family obligations) and their impact on training and competing.
    • Boats will be configured at the discretion of the coaches.
    • Boats may be comprised of students from multiple schools, but all students must be affiliated with Maritime Rowing Club through one of its scholastic programs. Once a boat is assigned an affiliation, a rower will not switch his/her affiliation during the season.
